You’d be forgiven for thinking that any old brush would suffice for painting a wall, ceiling, door or floor, but will the quality be up to the standard expected of the professional building trade? Here, product manager at leading decorating tool brand Fat Hog, Paul Farrell, discusses the merits of taking a little bit more time to select the right brush for the job and the eventual benefits this will offer.

We’d all love there to be a block-busting all-purpose super brush that is perfect for every job and substrate under the sun, but until Superman takes up paint brush manufacturing you’ll have to put the groundwork in to establish what brush is right for the job at hand.

There are a myriad of aspects to consider when choosing the right brush and none of them should be disregarded if you want the brush that is going to get the job done right first time, every time. With time at a premium the last thing you want is to be going back over a wall or floor because the brush didn’t do its job first time round.

Your first thought should focus on what type of paint you are using and what type of brush will help you achieve the maximum performance and quality from the product. At this stage you’ll be selecting from brushes that are made from either natural bristle or synthetic filaments. For example, Fat Hog’s Duroc brush is 100% synthetic, ensuring the soft tips deliver a smooth finish in solvent and water based paints, while its deep filament flagging creates maximum pick up. Further to this, a thermally fused resin and wedge system ensures an ultimate degree of durability. And perhaps most crucially to builders is the fact that a synthetic brush has a life expectancy five times greater than that of a natural bristle brush, meaning there’ll be less time spent selecting the right brush and more time providing a high quality finish.

There are also brushes on the market, such as Fat Hog’s Moura, that provide the comfort and feel of a natural bristle product but incorporate the performance attributes of the latest innovative synthetic filaments – ensuring you’ve got all of the strengths but none of the perceived weaknesses of natural bristle brushes. These brushes are perfectly suited to providing a controlled, smooth finish in solvent-based paints.

For a smoother finish, use a brush with tipped ends as these create more controlled even strokes, reducing unsightly splatter and ‘tram lines’ in the paint, which will ultimately mean you can spend less time cleaning up and more time on the next job. It’s for reasons like this that it’s worth paying that little bit extra for a brush of undoubted quality, as cheaper brushes contain little filament and are made from poor quality bristle, conspiring to produce a poor painting tool that will cause more harm than good.

For the best results on whatever jobs you’re faced with always buy quality paint tools, as ultimately your reputation will depend on it. A quality paint tool won’t let you down even if you’re using a cheaper paint product. Investing in the best will ensure you achieve a professional finish every time and will ensure the business keeps coming in!
