At the 2010 ABMA Annual Convention Industrial and Maintenance Division Meeting a formal request was made to the Suppliers Division noting the desire of the manufacturers and users of extruded filaments to co-develop a voluntary color coding system for use in the broom, brush and mop industry to better manage shop floor inventories and to reduce the potential for material cross contamination.

Accordingly, the American Brush Manufacturers Association created a Color Coding Task Force, whose purpose was to coordinate and produce a standardized voluntary process for the industry. According to Jim Benjamin of Precision Brush and Task Force Chair: “This voluntary Color Coding agreement is a prime example as to how working within an association such as ABMA can accomplish an initiative to strengthen the industry that no individual company could accomplish alone.” Any company who wishes to participate in this voluntary agreement should follow the procedure as defined below:

Items to be color coded

The following items will be the initial items for which the following color coding schedule will apply:

  • Nylon 6 - Red
  • Nylon 6.6 - Yellow
  • Nylon 6.12 - Orange
  • PBT (Polyester) - Green
  • PP (Polypropylene) - Blue
Coding requirements

Wrapped hanks of the required materials should have the correct color stripe applied continuously over the entire length of the hank, so that as the hank is cut into shorter lengths, each length shall still posses the correct color coding identification. We leave the manner of the application and the material basis of the color to the discretion of the producer.
Cartons for each respective material shall also have a color coding mark plainly on the label such that quick visual identification is achieved. We leave the manner of the application and the material basis of the color to the discretion of the producer.

Purchase order specification

Manufacturers who wish to receive color coded materials should utilize language in their purchase orders requiring the use of color coding as outlined above. Extruded filament producers should not be under any requirement to produce materials that are color coded unless such language is part of the purchase order.

Implementation

Color coding may begin as soon a possible but no later than with filament orders produced beginning October 1, 2010. No remarking of material in stock is required.
