Nail Brushes - An Important Tool in Effective Handwashing. Advice for Good Hand Hygiene from Hillbrush

“Hands are the main pathways of germ transmission so good hand hygiene is an important measure to avoid the transmission of harmful germs and prevent infections. It’s particularly important in food service operations and care homes, or any environment where food is prepared and served, that everyone is correctly trained in how to wash their hands thoroughly,” explains Catherine Watkinson Global Food Hygiene Expert at brush manufacturers, Hillbrush.

“According to the World Health Organisation, hand washing needs to be thorough and take as long as singing “Happy Birthday” twice! The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also recommends good nail hygiene and promotes diligently scrubbing trimmed fingernails which may harbour dirt and germs with a nailbrush”.

Catherine gives these tips for effective hand washing:

Clean your hands by rubbing them with an alcohol-based formulation if there is no visible dirt. This is a quicker and more effective method, and kinder to skin, than washing with soap and water.
Wash your hands with soap and water when hands are visibly dirty or visibly soiled with blood or other body fluids or after using the toilet. If exposure to potential spore-forming pathogens is strongly suspected or proven, including outbreaks of Clostridium difficile, hand washing with soap and water is the preferred means.

When washing your hands, don’t forget to interlace your fingers right palm over left and vice versa. Use a nail brush, then dry hands thoroughly, ideally with a disposable towel. Use the disposable towel to finally turn off the tap.
