Creativeworld Trends 2016/2017: 'Do it yourself' made easy

Creativeworld, the leading international trade fair for hobbies, crafts and artists’ requisites, will be presenting the trends for the forthcoming season from 30 January to 2 February 2016. During these four days, specialist retailers from all over the world will be able to get a good deal of inspiration for seasonal displays of techniques and materials in the innovative special area in Hall 4.1. The design tips will take their cue from specific trends in the sector, but also from the design scene in general. They point retailers in the direction of new ways to display their products so as to increase the desire of their customers to buy them. The special display is also well worth seeing for exhibitors, as they can get some valuable ideas here for their own product developments.

The presentation of the new trends, which the Trend Bureau bora.herke.palmisano have developed for Creativeworld at the behest of Messe Frankfurt, has been greatly appreciated by visitors to the show for many years. This year, visitors with a special interest in the field can look forward to three trend scenarios 'surface', 'form' and 'pattern'. In these scenarios, the trend consultants will provide a rich seam of ideas and easy-to-implement tips and suggestions for various creative and artistic pursuits. Be it for gifts and packaging, furniture decoration, clothing and accessories for the home or creatively embellished note books, greeting cards and mobile-phone cases – the Trend Show has some clever, practical suggestions and ideas.

“These creative trends really inspire you to do something creative yourself and try new ideas. They demonstrate what will be in demand in the way of materials, colours and designs in the forthcoming hobby and craft season. At the same time, visitors will learn about some exciting creative techniques. Retailers really shouldn't miss this – nor indeed should manufacturers,” says Michael Reichhold, Director of Creativeworld.

Surface: constantly reinvented surface effects

The 'surface' trend is all about working on, designing and creating a wide variety of different kinds of surface. Visitors will see how interesting textures can be obtained through painting, tooling, printing, marbling, craquelure glazing or knotting. Natural materials dominate in this style, where grey, sand and wood colours are prevailing. Numerous decorative creations such as vases, jugs, bags, key fobs and wooden boxes have their surfaces enhanced, creating very modern effects with their muted colours. Concrete and granite tones are also frequently found, as are macramé techniques, whereby a wide variety of yarns, ribbons and cords can be cleverly and skilfully woven together.

Form: clever designs for clothing and everyday objects

The trend scenario entitled 'form' also presents a wide repertoire of possibilities for the creative design of selected objects. Greeting cards, notebooks, exercise books, notepads, tee shirts and mobile phone cases can all be given a makeover using a wide range of techniques. Printing, stencilling, drawing, cutting and tooling – everything showcased in this trend scenario has one thing in common: the creative adaptations are decorated with bold patterns and dot matrices and are restricted to strong shades of blue, black and white, so as to make a clear, sporty and striking statement.

Pattern: multi-faceted patterns that create real eye-catchers

The 'pattern' trend involves painting, drawing, water-colour effects, embroidery and shaping, so as to create real eye-catchers with playful, artistic decorations. Vintage furniture acquires an elaborately unusual and individual appearance through the addition of blossom, flower and leaf motifs in dark sensual colours like aubergine, deep blues and greens or luminous orange. Pearls and sequins adorn cushions and clothes. Paper flowers or individual embossed seals serve as decorative elements that set a special tone when it comes to gift wrapping.

Creative activities and an opportunity to have a go

A workstation presents the various stages in the creation of a selection of the ideas that are used and displayed in the Trend Show. Staff from the Trend Bureau will be on hand to help those who want to try out the techniques for themselves, using appropriate materials.

A café adjacent to the Trend Forum provides an inviting place to relax and fortify oneself with a drink and a tasty snack, to reflect on what one has seen, to explore it further in conversation and gain further inspiration.

All three trend scenarios are summarised again in an approachable form in a Trend Brochure. This will be laid out on a reading table and available for people to take away with them. In it, visitors will also find references to interesting publications, international journals and specialist books from various publishers, which give additional ideas and inspiration for developing the creative trends.

“Our Trends give trade visitors valuable suggestions as to what can be done in practical creative situations, using the materials that are on offer at the show,” explains designer, Claudia Herke. “At our workstation, we also offer all those with an interest in the field the opportunity to experience for themselves just what fun creative craftwork is, as they try things out for themselves. Retailers are always keen to avail themselves of this opportunity, because, on the basis of this experience, they can then advise their customers authoritatively and encourage them to buy appropriate new and fashionable materials and to try out new craft techniques.”
