FEIBP Open Golf Championship 2016

On 6th and 7th September, 24 golfers from 6 countries gathered together at the Home of Golf, St Andrews, for the FEIBP Open Championship.

The last major pre-FEIBP Congress golf event took place in Malmö, Sweden in 2001 and hence a return was long overdue.

The draw of a trip to the birthplace of the sport coupled with a very well attended congress directly after in Edinburgh made for a fantastic turnout of players from all sections of the brush industry with manufacturers, suppliers and retirees all well represented.

After a welcome meal together at the Playfairs Restaurant & Steakhouse followed by an evening of merriment, snoring roommates, people falling out of bed and lost luggage, players embarked on the short walk to the first tee of the testing Jubilee Course, said to be the most challenging of the seven courses in the town. Although the sun was shining and the forecast set fair for the two days of the Championship, the wind was up to 25km/h which made for difficult conditions for all players.

Five hours later our group returned to the Links Clubhouse for a welcoming beverage and to add up their stableford scores for the first round. The leaders after the first round were the British contingent of Frank Graham (Charles Bentley & Son 40 points), Mark Samuel (Mark Samuel Trading 36 points) and Rob Coleman (Coleman Hall Products 34 points). Winner of the nearest the pin prize, kindly donated by The Hill Brush Company was Terry Hogan of Perlon, who (by his own admission) hit a lucky short iron to within 6 feet of the flag on the 5th hole (he missed the putt for birdie of course!)

On Tuesday night we dined at the original 19th Hole of St Andrews, the Jigger Inn, where many professionals eat and socialize during the Open Championship when it is held at St Andrews. This cozy pub is located adjacent to the 17th fairway of the Old Course which gave our group the opportunity to pose for photos on the famous Swilkan Bridge and to see the infamous Road Hole bunker on the 17th.

After another sleepless night for many (more snoring), we packed up our cases, checked out of the Ardgowan Hotel and made the short drive to the Eden Clubhouse for round 2, on the slightly easier Eden Course. To the delight of us all, the wind had dropped and we enjoyed perfect conditions for golf.

With all players keen to improve on their first day performance, and with the coveted prizes still up for grabs, play resumed shortly after 9am. Scoring on day two was, as expected, better than the previous day with the best score of the day being recorded by Greg Miller (Mill Rose Company 38 points). Second best score went to the experienced John Bennett (ex Dawson-Koti Ltd 35 points) and third placed was Steve Stacey (also ex Dawson-Koti 34 points). Nearest the pin winner on the second day was Andrew McIlroy of Perlon, who also missed his birdie putt.

Final scores were kept a secret until the prize presentation which took place during the General Assembly at the Congress in Edinburgh.

Winners of the team prize (combined scores of 4 individual players) were team 1 consisting of Andrew McIlroy (Perlon), Günter Muckenfuss (Perlon), Frank Graham (Charles Bentley & Son) and Philip Coward (The Hill Brush Company) with a combined total of 239 points.

Third place in the individual event went to Rob Coleman (Coleman Hall Products) with 65 points. In second place was Greg Miller (Mill Rose) with 68 points and the winner of the Claret Jug was Frank Graham with 70 points.

A great time was had by all and we hope that this event marks the rebirth of a pre-FEIBP Congress golf event in the future. Any people wishing to play golf before next year’s event in Leipzig, Germany should contact Andrew McIlroy of Perlon to register their interest.
