WOLF Abrasive Filaments for Brush Manufacturers: Product Introduction and Application Experience Sharing

Since its establishment in 2007, WOLF (Shenzhen Tide Filaments Co Ltd) has been committed to manufacturing the best abrasive filaments for use by brush manufacturers across the globe. Its product offering encompasses four different varieties of filaments, which are categorized according to their intended application:
  • “SCF” Super Cleaning Filaments – Filaments designed to increase surface friction enabling rapid dirt removal, polishing, and de-fouling in scrubbing and cleaning brushes for the home environment.
  • “OAF” Industrial Abrasive Filaments – Industrial brushes for finishing, polishing and deburring.
  • “DAF” Diamond Abrasive Filaments – Impregnated with artificial diamond abrasive additives for faster and better grinding.
  • “COVER” Cover Abrasive Filaments – Special abrasive filaments covered with pure nylon external surface suitable for polishing, cleaning, and deburring large areas.
Due to COVID-19, China has seen its 2020 annual holiday extended by a month in order to quarantine and block infection. As a result of this proactive and efficient containment, the pandemic has been controlled effectively. It has been half a year since the outbreak and, overall, China’s production, economy and life in general is getting back to normal.

Affected by the pandemic, the demand for industrial abrasive brushes has decreased by 20%, whilst civil BBQ abrasive brush materials have been increased by about 50% against the normal trend. WOLF and BBQ brush filaments are mainly exported to Europe and the United States because more consumers are choosing to eat at home and, hence, are spending money on updating their kitchenware.

Through our research into the principles and technical characteristics of specific case studies, we select and use advanced abrasives and superior nylon to produce high-quality and affordable abrasive brush filaments.

WOLF’s SCF filaments for cleaning brushes advocate broad potential for brush development and allow space for market development. Their principle is that the roughness of the end of the brush filament is greater than that of pure nylon yarn alone. The contact friction during brushing is therefore greater, so that the cleaning and removal abilities are stronger.

The roughness enhances the function of the brush filament when cleaning and descaling. According to the needs of the application, the appropriate roughness or friction removal ability can be achieved by using grits with different thickness, and/or increased grit content. Therefore, we believe that the experience of industrial cleaning and descaling can be applied to the civilian brushes to remove heavy dirt and scale deposits which has a wide range of possible applications. These include the cleaning of floors, bathroom, garbage cans, shoe soles etc.

Regarding the tufting of these special filaments: despite any increase in equipment abrasion and the slower production speeds, it is possible to tuft abrasive filaments in large quantities and high efficiency by replacing the wear-resistant tufting machine parts manufactured according to the Chinese experience. Accordingly, consumers will be happy to pay for the quality cleaning brushes to compensate for these costs.

In addition, for the application of industrial abrasive brushes, we have focused on the polishing and deburring of metal surfaces and introduced the following new materials:
  • Z1.SIC / Z2.SIC: These primary and secondary enhanced silicon carbide brush filaments offer more than a 30% increase in abrasive and removal capabilities.
  • A series of GA, enhanced with AO grits, for use in grinding and polishing metal surfaces such as aluminium and copper products with lower abrasion.
When using enhanced brush filaments, it is important to assess and mitigate for the parameters involved e.g. brush filament depths, support back pressure relief and/or lower speeds of revolution etc. The engineering principle follow that if the end face of the brush filament is rougher/sharper, then short working hours, faster processing and/or low-speed precision abrasion and grinding hours must be allowed for, thus achieving greater wear resistance, longer service life and higher volumes processed.
