What is Clean?

Cleaning, disinfecting, and sanitizing play an important role in reducing the spread of bacteria and germs in public areas. According to the CDC, some illnesses can stay on some surfaces for hours or even days. Regular cleaning is required to limit the transmission of the disease in commercial and public spaces. Practicing proper hand hygiene can also prevent the spread of germs that make people sick.

Cleaning with commercial cleaners that contain soap or detergent decreases the number of germs on surfaces and reduces risk of infection from surfaces in your facility. Cleaning alone removes most types of harmful germs (like viruses, bacteria, parasites, or fungi) from surfaces.

Sanitizing reduces the remaining germs on surfaces after cleaning.

Disinfecting can kill harmful germs that remain on surfaces after cleaning. By killing germs on a surface after cleaning, disinfecting can further lower the risk of spreading disease.

If you do sanitize or disinfect, clean surfaces first because impurities like dirt may make it harder for sanitizing or disinfecting chemicals to get to and kill germs.

Tips for an Effective Cleaning

Cleaning & Disinfect High Touched Areas Daily

High touched areas should be cleaned regularly. High touched areas include pens, counters, shopping carts, door handles, stair rails, elevator buttons, touchpads, restroom fixtures, and desks.

Clean High Areas First

Removed dust and dander from high areas first. They often fall to lower surfaces, so make sure to clean high surfaces first.

Clean in One Direction

To prevent re-contaminating previously cleaned surfaces, make sure to clean in one direction. Circular wiping risks spreading contaminants and infections over surfaces.1 While cleaning the floor, use a ‘figure 8’ motion to prevent the re-contamination of previously cleaned floor surfaces.

How to Clean the Floor

Germs and bacteria on the floor easily spread throughout a facility or public space. Cleaning and disinfecting the floor is key to reducing the spread of COVID-19.

Using a dust mop or broom, remove all dirt and large debris from the floor.
For wet mopping, remove the previously used mop head and attach a freshly laundered mop head to the handle.
Following the guidelines and specific chemical instructions, fill the mop bucket with a new cleaning solution.
While cleaning the floor, use a ‘figure 8’ motion to prevent the re-contamination of previously cleaned floor surfaces.
