FEIBP Congress 2024: Working Group Reports

The Chairs of the four Working Groups of the Federation shared the nature of their discussions with the delegation, which covered general economic outlooks for the different sectors:

Working Group for Technical Brushes

Jürgen Lessmann (Lessmann Gmbh) and Thomas Holland-Letz (Verband der Deutschen Pinsel und Bürstenhersteller e V.) spoke on behalf of the Working Group for Technical Brushes, with Jürgen summarising the group’s discussion concerning the economic outlook for the technical brush industry in Europe which indicated a generally bleak situation, with expectations for the next six months even more pessimistic. However, Jürgen managed to add a positive note to the situation, suggesting that there are always fluctuations of this nature and that this period of weaker economic activity will eventually see improvements.

The Working Group for Technical Brushes invites presentations of innovations of key brush machine manufacturers and component suppliers, with this year’s contributions coming from Roth Composite Materials and Borghi with news of their latest machinery innovations, as well as from Perlon, who shared news of its latest abrasive filament.

Finally, Thomas updated delegates regarding technical and legal developments affecting the sector, with special reference to technical brush standard EN 10183 for power driven brushes that is nearing the end of its revision process and should be completed by the end of the year.

Working Group Personal Care

Chris Boomer of Denroy reported the findings of the Working Group for Personal Care brushes that has been in existence for 8 years.

During its short meeting, the Working Group discussed the possibility of creating an FEIBP Standard involving the ISO 16409:2016 which specifies requirements and test methods for performance criteria for manual interdental brushes. This would focus on the testing of cleaning efficiency and the environmental implications and lifespan of the product. This would be similar in nature to the PHB Charter and would allow manufacturers to supply better products for the European market and hopefully encourage increased membership of the Federation.

Working Group Paintbrushes

Zeynep Yildizeli of the FEIBP Secretariat spoke on behalf of this Working Group. She reported that their discussions had centred around updates from the different markets of its members, as well as some relevant legislative items at a European level.

Working Group Professional Hygiene Brushware (PHB)

Simon Lorillière (Brosserie Brenet) summarised the meeting of this Working Group, sharing that their discussions had included topics such as revising the website and updating the PHB Charter. With insufficient time to fully explore all items on the agenda, it was decided that there will be a further meeting in April.

Thanks to Philip Coward

Following 25 years as Chair of the PHB Working Group, Philip Coward (Hillbrush) has stepped down from this role, and he was invited to the stage to receive a gift of a silver plate in commemoration of his time at the helm of the group. He also received a specially boxed gift of champagne upon which the group’s members had written personal messages of thanks for his contribution over the years.

Philip remarked how wonderful it is to have so many friends in the FEIBP and ABMA and encouraged members to attend their meetings for years to come, as these are where strong bonds and fantastic relationships are formed. To Simon, Philip said, “It has been fun, but I am glad I have handed over now, and I think you should do 25 years as well!”
